Basic info
NaBento® can be a much more reliable and economic alternative to conventional mineral liners. This laminated composite is approx. 10mm thick and has bentonite, a highly water-swellable clay, contained within various textile supporting layers. The clay can be either sodium or calcium bentonite. The components are sewn together in a special way to provide composite action and high internal shear strength. The supporting geotextiles and nonwoven aerofleece are designed to act together with the bentonite so that, once sewn together in the factory, NaBento® provides a long-term sealing layer.
LAGA, the waste working group set up by the German federal states, assessed the suitability of NaBento® RL-C (calcium bentonite) and RL-N (sodium bentonite) for use in creating mineral seals in landfill surface sealing systems for class I & II landfills and found them to have service lives with respect to sealing performance and resistance to mechanical damage of > 100 years. NaBento® is manufactured to suit the particular application. The type and quantity of bentonite can be specified as well as the particular synthetic raw materials, ancillary fittings and detailed design. A special coating can be applied to the external surfaces of NaBento® to give better protection against desiccation and increase the local shear strength with the adjacent soils or other contact materials.
The installation of NaBento® is straightforward and generally independent of the weather. Bentonite powder/paste or a special adhesive is used to seal the overlapped joints between widths.
