Geosynthetics are finding a broad range of uses in Railways. Well thought out concepts
and designs provide permanent answers to technically demanding construction problems. High-tensile
geogrids and wovens reinforce unstable ground, and as no expensive soil replacement is necessary,
they also reduce construction costs. The easy handling characteristics of geosynthetics speed up
progress on site. Geosynthetics are used as a separation layer to prevent the structural layers
from mixing with the underlying ground - as can be seen in the
animation.
- Main applications in Railways:
- foundations of earthworks on soils with low-bearing capacity
- reinforcement of embankments over pile caps, vibro-stone columns, etc.
- reinforcement of retaining walls and extra-steep earthwork slopes
- separation of original ground and load-carrying layers
- safety of railway infrastructure in areas prone to subsidence
- access roads and transport routes
- subgrade dewatering
