The Grand Lake Meadows Route 102 to Route 695 is one of twelve sections of
the Fredericton - Moncton Highway Project, which encompasses the construction
of a 121 mile, four lane highway between Longs Creek, near Fredericton,
and Magnetic Hill, near Moncton, New Brunswick. Maritime Road Development
Corporation is the project management company for this project.
The Grand Lake Meadows Route 102 to Route 695 project consisted of the
construction of two new bridges that spanned the Saint John and
Jemseg Rivers. The subgrade at the bridge approaches consist
of glacier till. Large boulders were present at ground
surface with four meters of organic silts underlain by silts,
and soft clay. Due to tidal influences and spring flooding of
approximately two meters in this area, the bridge approaches were
designed to have a finished elevation of five meters above the existing grade.
Access to this area was prohibited due to the low bearing capacity of the subgrade.
Therefore, FORNIT® 30
biaxial geogrid was used to reinforce the subgrade to allow construction equipment
access to construct the bridge embankments. To date, approximately 79,380 yd² of FORNIT® biaxial geogrid have been installed.
The project is scheduled for completion in June, 2002.
