The Keen Transport Company's new terminal consists of approximately 69 acres on Jimmy Deloach Parkway in
Savannah, Georgia. Keen Transport Company is a receiver/shipper of imported heavy equipment which is shipped
into the Savannah, Georgia Ports Authority. The imported heavy equipment will be transported from the
Savannah Ports Authority and stored at the new Keen Transport terminal prior to shipping to the end user.
The project began in early November 1999 and was completed in July 2000. The general contractor on this project was Malphrus Construction of Savannah, Georgia.
The existing soils on site consist primarily of saturated sands and silts
due the high ground water table in this area. The geotechnical engineering
firm of Stevenson & Palmer of Savannah, Georgia designed the equipment parking
areas to include a biaxial geogrid in order to improve
the bearing capacity of the existing subgrade. Through a competitive
bidding and product approval process, HUESKERs' FORNIT® 30 biaxial geogrid was used on this project.
Approximately 68,200 yd² of FORNIT® 30 biaxial geogrid was installed on this project.
The equipment storage area was designed to consist of the following:
- FORNIT® 30 biaxial geogrid placed directly above the existing subgrade
- 8 inches of ½ inch minus base course aggregate
Note: The equipment storage area was designed without an asphalt surface and will not be asphalted in the future.
